«Всего лишь несколько месяцев назад ушел на войну»: на фронте погиб известный фотограф-орнитолог

Alexey Sapuga was a passionate birdwatcher during peacetime. His memory is honored by the annual all-Ukrainian summer birdwatching competitions.

Birdwatching, also known as birding, is a popular hobby among nature enthusiasts. It involves observing and identifying different species of birds in their natural habitats. For Alexey Sapuga, it was more than just a hobby – it was a way of life.

Born in Ukraine in 1950, Sapuga developed a love for birds at a young age. He would spend hours in the fields and forests near his home, watching and learning about the different birds that inhabited the area. As he grew older, his passion for birdwatching only intensified.

Sapuga’s dedication to birdwatching was evident to all who knew him. He could often be found with his binoculars and camera, exploring new areas and documenting his sightings. He was known for his keen eye and ability to identify even the most elusive birds.

But it wasn’t just about the thrill of spotting a rare bird for Sapuga. He saw birdwatching as a way to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the world around him. He believed that birds were a symbol of freedom and peace, and he found solace in their songs and movements.

In 1995, Sapuga’s passion for birdwatching led him to become a member of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Birds. He actively participated in their conservation efforts and was a strong advocate for protecting bird habitats. He also organized birdwatching trips for school children, hoping to instill in them a love for nature and birds.

One of Sapuga’s greatest achievements was the establishment of the annual all-Ukrainian summer birdwatching competitions. These competitions, also known as «birdathons,» were a way for birdwatchers from all over Ukraine to come together and compete in identifying the most bird species in a designated area within a set time frame.

Sapuga’s vision for the birdathons was to promote birdwatching as a fun and educational activity, while also raising awareness about the importance of bird conservation. The first competition was held in 2000 and was a huge success. It attracted participants from all age groups and backgrounds, and the number of participants has been growing ever since.

Sadly, Sapuga passed away in 2010, but his legacy lives on through the annual birdathons. Each year, the competitions are dedicated to his memory, and his contributions to the world of birdwatching are remembered and celebrated.

The birdathons have become a highly anticipated event in the birdwatching community in Ukraine. Participants not only get to showcase their bird identification skills, but they also get to explore different regions of the country and appreciate its diverse birdlife. The competitions have also helped raise awareness about the threats facing birds and their habitats, and have inspired many to become more involved in conservation efforts.

In addition to the birdathons, Sapuga’s memory is also honored through the Alexey Sapuga Birdwatching Center, which was established in 2012. The center serves as a hub for birdwatching activities and education, and also conducts research on bird populations and their habitats.

Alexey Sapuga may no longer be with us, but his passion for birdwatching and his dedication to bird conservation continue to inspire others. The annual birdathons and the Alexey Sapuga Birdwatching Center are a testament to his love for birds and his desire to share that love with others. He may have been a zealous birdwatcher, but his legacy goes beyond just observing birds – it is about appreciating and protecting the natural world around us.
